Deep Infill vs Nylon

What is a deep infill gravity system?

American turf Co’s proprietary golf and grass duplication systems has always been to simulate mother natures finest features. Our approach is to merge the natural elements that’s required to grow natural grasses and incorporate them into a synthetic version by simply replacing the living aspect of a living blades of grass with a special formulated synthetically engineered non-living fiber. The rest of the natural components are unchanged. From its subbase to its own dirt system (deep in-fill) the deep in-fill provides a permanent cushion and acts as the fiber support with no artificial grain. Nylon or nail downs came to the market in 2012 designed to be glued direct and to offer an artificial ground cover to the general public as a do-it-yourself line found in many hardware stores; Cosco, Home Depot, Lowes and the likes. No training required and is why the general landscaper, window screen company, pool builders, etc had adopted this turf cover in the many services they offer. Not to say that these are a bad product, (they are what they are) only that they do come with their pros and cons to be sure. Remember there is nothing cutting edge about nailing down glue down carpets. Typically, these commodity lines are measured in ounces and come with a pre-fiber support built in as the secondary porous fiber referred to as the thatch. This is what causes the streaking or lines, odor challenges. The nails are restricting it from contracting and expanding with the seasons and is where the wrinkling or gapping comes from. They come with a pronounced directional grain, they tend to firm up rapidy and get unbearably hot pretty quick. In short, they look and feel like carpet, not natural sods. American turf co is not so much in the turf business. That would be too easy to carry around a box of green samples. We are in the grass simulations business for those who don’t want to settle for the run of the mill green ground cover.

Problems with nylon synthetic putting greens

  • Because nail down greens cannot take an infill, the fibers will “mat down” in a given time and become unstoppably fast. nothing that can be done to remedy the problem. Many companies make silly claims that their carpets are “heat set” with “memory” and will not mat down. It simply makes sense that if there is nothing to support the fibers upright, they will mat down over time. Also, read the “fine print” of these companies’ warranties on their nail down greens – “normal matting or compression of fiber or compression of rubber and foam backing or padding is expressly excluded from the warranty”. Draw you own conclusion from such contradicting statements.

  • Nylon is a stiffer, more rigid fiber. A rigid fiber can also make the ball “bounce” or “hop” and not hold shots. You might as well take your stroke and start over less you be practicing for the castle and coaster or cracker jack open.

  • Nylon has streak lines caused either by inconsistencies of the dye lot or during the shearing process, which runs the length of the turf and can seriously hamper true ball roll.

After extensive research of the fiber and manufacturing process, we have determined that the technology for nail down putting greens has yet to produce a putting surface that consistently provides true ball roll and holding characteristics of a real grass green.
