Facts & Foes

Keeping You Informed

Synthetic lawns, putting and grass surfaces are becoming more popular across the US and, likewise, we have seen an increase in artificial turf companies who install them or out source them. Often landscaping companies will gain access to a turf line, brief their employees, and then will add artificial grass and putting greens to their service list. Please do not be fooled. Do not assume that all advertised artificial turf companies are reputable or qualified. The turnover rate in this industry is frightening.

Just google companies from two years ago. Most artificial turf companies are gone and have since been replaced with new artificial turf companies. A homeowner may be inclined to purchase this service from new companies based on cost alone, only to be sorely disappointed later.

Here’s what you need to know… The ultimate quality of an artificial turf depends not only on the quality of the product but also who’s installing it. Professional installation skills cannot be learned from a video. It takes years of manufacturing expertise, continuous research and development and a commitment to excellence.

Remember, there is no regulating body for this industry. Inferior products and sub-standards installations are everywhere. In recent years, a wave of  nail down carpets efforting a comeback with different colors and textures, usually in the form of nylon or nail down These mass-produced synthetic turf carpets are over hyped, low yield products that are designed to be glued down to a cement slab. The fact is an indoor/outdoor carpet will not produce the desirable results found on a real country club golf green.

Since most sensible consumers refuse to turn their backyard into a cement slab, these companies will form a base out of sand, abc road base, or just go over your existing dirt and then “secure it down with nails.” Then they make claims that this procedure is “cutting edge” or “state of the art.” There is nothing “state of the art” about nailing glue-down carpet to dirt.

Like honest dan, the used car man, says, “regardless of truth and fact or the lack of it, marketing perception is reality.” Martin Martinez, founder of American Turf Co., says “that statement is all about smoke and mirrors. It takes rigorous training, customer service and proved methods plus workmanship that will pass the test of time. That is reality.” A professionally installed deep in-fill system is the best alternative to real golf greens, or lush lawn systems, and it is also the most complex and labor intensive.
